I’m Brian Robinson, once an accidental fat man.
I started growing my belly with my first beer. It was my first year in college (yes, I got a late start down the drinking path) and two girl-type friends of mine and I shared a six pack of Löwenbräu. We all got drunk for $3.49, which was expensive for beer at the time.
That Löwenbräu was the gateway drug to Miller, Bud, Schlitz, Hamm’s, Goeble, Black Label, Kronenbourg, Coor’s, Strough’s and many more college beers. Over the years I grew to enjoy Becks and eventually Miller Lite in an attempt to go low tar.
Meanwhile, I grew up on McDonald’s, Coke and cereals with toys. It was a great childhood.
When it comes to burgers and fries I tried them all: Hardee’s, Red Barn, Lil Tavern, Burger Chef, Wendy’s and Burger King. I liked Wendy’s the best because their burgers were juicy because they were made with worms (so goes the rumor in school). Burger Chef had the best toys and they always served a cookie with every meal. And Lil Tavern’s burgers tasted like those frozen White Castle burgers available in grocery stores you couldn’t eat (or even order!) just one.
In college, I would walk two miles to go to the nearest McDonald’s. Since I am naturally lazy, that was the first sign that I was hooked.
Soon my belly grew and grew. Before I knew it, I hit 272 pounds in December 2012. I had to do something. Another inch tall and I’d be round.
I changed my eating and drinking habits and lost 97 pounds.
But lately the numbers on my scale are creeping back up and my blood pressure is out of whack.
So today I am renewing my vows. I’m restarting my journey down the path towards health.
